“That phase in one’s journey can only be understood by those with similar experiences. I describe it as a phase that is difficult to put in words. Just like any struggle in life, you get to question your self-worth, capabilities, and decision-making skills when things are not working out...”

I moved to Sweden in 2020 to study for a master's degree at Malmö University. Moving to a new country can challenge your sense of self and identity, when I got to Sweden, I was confronted with questions about who I really am and if I belong here. Adapting to a new culture, tradition, and social norms was one hell of a journey.

The language barrier was the most challenging aspect of this journey. In 2021, I started applying for jobs which was another challenging phase. I got a number of rejection emails and I also got calls from some recruiters that I never heard back from. That phase in one’s journey can only be understood by those with similar experiences. I describe it as a phase that is difficult to put in words. Just like any struggle in life, you get to question your self-worth, capabilities, and decision-making skills when things are not working out and I felt that every day I got one of those emails.

In September 2022, ReDI School of Digital Integration Malmö was just about getting started with students’ recruitments and volunteers, I went there to be a volunteer and Maryam Safi, the student's community manager suggested that I should join them as an intern if I wanted to. There and then, we wrote down my duties and responsibilities and I began immediately. The internship lasted for 6 months, and I am officially working for ReDI now.

While there are challenges, there have also been numerous benefits including personal growth and a chance to experience different cultures with different nationalities in Malmö.
