Swedish culture and mindset

This event will guide you through the underlying logic of Swedish culture, and our speaker Sofi Tegsveden Deveaux will explain how individualism (but not selfishness!) has shaped Swedish society.

Family celebration midsummer.

As you arrive to the land of lagom, you may discover that Sweden is not the utopia you expected it to be. Although the country is living up to it’s reputation of gender equality, a healthy work-life balance and closeness to nature, you may be disappointed to discover that the Swedes seem to be colder than the Nordic winters. Your neighbours seem to be hiding from you, no one seems interested in becoming your friend, and when you’re in trouble, nobody offers their help. Your usual ways of approaching people appear not to be effective, and you may feel lonely, isolated and confused. But you are not alone! Swedish culture is more extreme than you may think, and many internationals struggle to navigate this new social context where new unwritten rules apply.

Sofi Tegsveden Deveaux, Swedish language teacher and Swedish culture coach, guides us through the underlying logic of Swedish culture, and explains how individualism (but not selfishness!) has shaped Swedish society. She explains the Swedish understanding of the public and the private, and how this impacts social life and relationships. We are given concrete examples and practical tools for integrating into Swedish culture and making the most of our stay in this beautiful country.
