“In 2020, I took a leap, moving from recently graduating design school to life in Sweden, where life rapidly changed—welcoming a child and adapting to pandemic life. Emotions were running high as a newcomer—excitement, uncertainty, and curiosity for new opportunities."
Relocating to Sweden became not just a move but a transformation, reshaping my life, work, and family dynamics. Four years on, here’s what I’ve learned:
With almost three years on parental leave, I was able to find balance, thanks to Sweden’s supportive parental system. This time let me reflect on my priorities as both a parent and a professional, and as my children were ready for förskolan (pre-school), I felt ready to dive back into my career.
The job market as an expat can be challenging, but kindness, connection, and persistence became my tools. Invaluable communities, especially International Citizen Hub Lund (ICHL), provided guidance, support, and resources that eased my career journey and equipped me with the tools I needed to navigate professional life in Sweden.
The design industry is always changing, with new tools and priorities like AI emerging every day. My goal was to find a company that values sustainability and human-centered design. IKEA’s commitment to these principles resonated with my vision, fusing my values with thoughtful design.
Each stage, from newcomer to finding community and the right career fit, has shaped who I am today. I’m grateful for the support that’s made balancing family and career not just feasible but rewarding. Sweden was more than a destination; it was a step into a new way of life.
Let's connect and keep this journey going!
