A New Chapter in Sweden: A Journey of Resilience and Joy

“I had always dreamed of exploring new horizons. The opportunity to move to Sweden for a better quality of life and job prospects was both exciting and challenging. With mixed emotions, we packed our belongings, said goodbye to friends and family in Dubai, and embarked on a Scandinavian adventure with my teenage twins and husband.”

The Decision to Move

We stood at the brink of a significant life transition. My name is Febin Sunny, originally from India, and I lived in Dubai for 15 years. I had always dreamed of exploring new horizons. The opportunity to move to Sweden for a better quality of life and job prospects was both exciting and challenging. With mixed emotions, we packed our belongings, said goodbye to friends and family in Dubai, and embarked on a Scandinavian adventure with my teenage twins and husband.

Arrival and Climate Adjustments

Stepping off the plane, we were greeted by a crisp, chilly air—a far cry from the heat we had left behind. The picturesque, snow-covered streets and the cozy, brightly lit homes created a sense of wonder and excitement but also a realization that we were stepping into a new, unfamiliar world. Adjusting to Sweden’s climate was one of our first and most significant encounters, especially the long, dark winters.

Embracing the Change

The transition from Dubai's heat to Sweden's cold was not easy, but it was a crucial part of our journey. Through perseverance and a positive attitude, we found ways to adapt and thrive in the new climate. I learned to appreciate the beauty of the snowy landscapes and the joys of winter activities, turning a daunting challenge into an integral part of the Swedish adventure.

Social Integration

Discovering International Citizen Hub Lund was a game-changer for me. They provided invaluable insights into the local culture and job market, making my transition smoother. Thanks to their assistance, I joined their Kick-Start Program for spring 2023. Meeting new people and learning about job seeking in Sweden became less intimidating.

International Citizen Hub Lund is an excellent resource for various needs—job hunting, insurance, joining a union, starting your own business, creating a CV, networking, exploring the city, balancing work and life, and mental well-being when moving to a new country. During Kick- Start Program, I gained vital knowledge and connected with inspiring individuals, learning from their diverse experiences. The session on buying a house in Sweden by Erik Olsson Real Estate helped us avoid cultural and legal surprises when purchasing an apartment in Lund. This was the first time I encountered such a supportive platform, making it easy for internationals to navigate a new city.

Balancing family responsibilities and adapting to a new place as a full-time mother and homemaker is never easy. However, these obstacles have enriched my life, broadened my perspectives, and made me more resourceful. The Social Hub (the English-speaking section of Interkultur Lund - offering a wide range of activities for language development and social establishment), also helped me expand my social connections through activities like the Language Café, Get in Touch events, local discovery tours, and yoga sessions.

Finding Purpose and Community by Volunteering

Volunteering has been a transformative experience for me, providing a sense of purpose and a strong sense of community. Joining the team at Erikshjälpen, a local second-hand shop, and participating in activities at the church allowed me to give back while connecting with others in meaningful ways.

At the second-hand shop, I met a diverse group of people, all working towards a common goal. This experience not only improved my Swedish language skills but also helped me understand Swedish culture better. Engaging with customers and fellow volunteers provided daily opportunities to build lasting relationships and expand my social connections.

Volunteering at the church further enriched my life. Through various events and community outreach programs, such as church coffee gatherings and the Christmas food fair, I connected with people from diverse backgrounds, all united by a shared mission of helping others. This sense of belonging and community support was invaluable as I navigated my new life in Sweden. These volunteer experiences have been crucial in my journey, providing a deeper sense of fulfillment and helping me establish a strong community in my new home.

Active Job Seeker

Since arriving in Sweden, I’ve been determined to restart my career and rediscover my happiness. I'm ready to embrace this journey, even if it means starting from scratch. With the support of International Citizen Hub Lund and the Social Hub, I've built an incredible web of connections and gained valuable insights that I never thought possible in any other country.

To expand my job opportunities, I have enrolled with Arbetsförmedlingen. As an active job seeker, I am constantly on the lookout for new opportunities to advance my career. I respond to job postings diligently and prioritize continually expanding my professional network. By staying proactive and engaged, I aim to find the perfect role that aligns with my skills and aspirations.

Every Day is a New Opportunity

I'm filled with both anticipation and a touch of apprehension as I eagerly await my next journey as a student. Finishing the SFI course has empowered me to pursue the next level grundläggande (Swedish as a Second Language) at Komvux Lund, where I am ready to fully immerse myself in learning Swedish. It's another exciting chapter in my life, and I feel a mix of excitement and nerves—totally normal!

I frequently visit the various language cafes in Lund to acquire new language skills and connect with new people. As I immerse myself in the vibrant energy of this bustling city, I can't help but reflect on the remarkable journey I've undertaken so far. I'm seamlessly balancing multiple roles: a dedicated homemaker, a determined job seeker navigating through rejections, a passionate volunteer, and an active social connector.

Making New Friends in Sweden

Throughout this journey, making new friends in Sweden has been a cornerstone of my experience. These new friendships have provided invaluable support, helping me navigate the complexities of a new culture and lifestyle. Whether through SFI, language cafes, community events, or volunteer activities, these connections have enriched my life, offering both emotional support and practical advice as I settled into my new home. Their kindness and companionship have been instrumental in my successful adaptation and continued growth in Sweden.

Navigating the Complexities of Immigrant Life

Moving to Sweden brings a mix of excitement and encounters, creating a unique and often complex experience. As an immigrant, navigating these complexities involves adapting to a new culture, learning a new language, and building a new social circle—all while managing the emotional and logistical aspects of resettlement. It requires resilience, adaptability, and a positive mindset. Despite the challenges, the journey offers me many opportunities for personal growth, new experiences, and the chance to build a fulfilling life in Sweden.

Reflection and Growth

One and a half years after our move, I reflect on my experiences, acknowledging the struggles and celebrating the growth. I look upon my children with pride. They have navigated the complexities of new climate, adapted to a different culture, conquered language barriers, and found their place in a new society. Our journey in Sweden is far from over, but we have built a foundation of resilience, adaptability, and mutual support. In the heart of Sweden, my family and I have found not just a new home but a new life filled with possibilities, proving that with determination and love, we can overcome any obstacle and thrive in a new environment.
