Hello everyone!! I am Shanmukharaj from southern part of India. I did my bachelor’s in mechanical engineering. As an automobile enthusiast I wanted to do masters in Europe. So, I decided to move to English speaking countries in Europe that’s why I chose Sweden, and moved here in August 2019.
I did my master’s in Production and Material Engineering; all my courses are in English, and I didn’t know much about the Swedish Language. I enrolled in SFI and started my classes for C Level in February 2020.
I was excited to learn the new language, but the covid crisis had put a break in my Swedish course. My evening classes got shifted to online class and then there was a break. I got to know the importance of knowing the Swedish language during my job search. Even the international companies in Sweden are looking or people with Swedish fluency. So I suggest all the internationals who wish to stay in Sweden for the long term and who are looking for jobs, the first thing you have to do after getting the personal number is registering for SFI. Since it’s a long queue it will take several months to start the course, so be the first one in the QUEUE.
Moving to a new country is hard and but learning the language is the best way to mingle with Swedes as language is part of their culture.
I graduated in June 2021 and started looking for jobs in Sweden. Job search is hard for me and sometimes it is depressing. After applying for a few months, I got only rejections. I felt like I needed help to review my CV and how to write a cover letter. I got the mail from Lund University regarding the Kick-Start Program at International Citizen Hub Lund . I thought I should not miss this opportunity and enrolled myself and got admitted to the program.
I felt the Kick-Start Program was like a mentorship program that gave me a lot of information about job search in Sweden, how to write your CV, cover letter and giving feedback, improving your networking skills, Swedish work culture, LinkedIn session and especially the drop-in sessions. It made me feel like a home, there is always a person to help you whenever you needed it.
Networking in Sweden is most important of all. Most of the jobs are based on internal references, networking with the right people will help you land the job. And Swedish people are more informal, kind and they trust their employees, so knowing someone in the company will make it easier for the job application and chances of getting the job is high.
